What are the key signs that a manual slack adjuster needs to be replaced?

One of the key functions of a manual slack adjuster is to maintain the correct clearance between the brake shoes and the brake drums. If the adjuster is not functioning correctly, the distance between the shoes and drums may become irregular, causing uneven or excessive wear on the brake drums. This results in either excessive wear in one area or reduced braking efficiency. In such cases, it’s crucial to inspect the slack adjuster to ensure it is maintaining the proper brake shoe positioning. If the adjuster cannot be properly calibrated, it must be replaced to avoid further damage to the braking system.

The primary role of the manual slack adjuster is to allow for precise adjustments of the brake shoes as they wear down. If the adjuster becomes stiff, difficult to turn, or if the adjustment mechanism fails to move at all, this can indicate internal failure, such as a jammed or damaged component. The slack adjuster that does not allow for proper adjustment may compromise brake performance by not maintaining adequate clearance between the brake shoes and drums. If this happens, replacing the slack adjuster is necessary to restore proper function.
